Thundercat Zooms Ahead With Sonic-Themed Song – SPIN

Thundercat has never been particularly interested in slowing down. The virtuosic bassist is currently performing as part of his Distracted AF tour, a 30-plus-date run supporting his latest album of the same name, and now he’s adding a little Sonic the Hedgehog velocity to the mix.

Thundercat has teamed with electronic musician Button Masher (aka Jake Silverman) for “Moving at Light Speed,” a new track out now via Brainfeeder. The artist will perform the song at Club Chaos: A Sonic 35th Anniversary Celebration, a sold-out, one-night-only Sonic experience taking over New York on Friday (Oct. 9).

“Moving at Light Speed” is exactly as advertised — bright, playful and twitchy, with Sonic’s familiar golden-ring sound effects popping up throughout. Thundercat supplies the falsetto, while Button Masher’s skittering electronic production gives the track the kind of caffeinated momentum you’d expect from the world’s fastest hedgehog.

For those who can’t visit Club Chaos in person, the event will stream via Sonic’s Twitch and YouTube channels. Thundercat is scheduled to hit the stage from 9:30-10:30 p.m. ET, following a set from Tee Lopes and preceding Austin Millz.

Button Masher, meanwhile, is no stranger to the intersection of electronic music, jazz and gaming culture. His new album Super Button Masher arrived last month via Brainfeeder, and his résumé includes collaborations with Phoenix, the 8-Bit Big Band, Evan Marien, Adam Neely, Sungazer and DJ Cutman.

Thundercat performs tonight in Tampa, Fl., and has dates on the books through Dec. 5 in Los Angeles. He will also headline the first day of the Dec. 11-12 Holiday Hootenanny in Austin, Tx., which will also feature Magdalena Bay, 54 Ultra, Drugdealer, Frost Children and Gelli Haha and the Charm.
