Kicking off with the title track “I Hear You” is a bold way to enter the senses with a song about hearing what’s in front of you and knowing what to leave behind, among all the chaos and strife. Blond Jesus establishes himself and an original artist, even though he credits his rock influences. There’s something pure that isn’t limited to rock music here though, and it begins here with his own authentic space. The lyrics tell all, which isn’t always the point with music, and they’re all great stories to their credit.
“Karma Buddy” is a playful look at a friendship turning into something more, according to Blond Jesus, and this is much more like a rock song on every level, with more of a band style track that crosses over into pop territory. This is not what you’d expect after the opening track, so it makes things interesting right off the bat.
“Hope Is All I Have” comes in with holding onto the truth being the proverbial. This one introduces some humor and storytelling from Blond Jesus. And it stays that way on “Mistletoe Glow” with its fuzzy holiday vibes. “Drunk 30” raises the bar with more rocking that wants to go all night long. This keeps in tradition with the previous two tracks, to contrast from the first two, and the guitar solo is a buzz.
“I’d Like To Be In Love With You” brings more comedy with a song about a date gone wrong, it’s part romantic and party comedy that way. Blond Jesus channels his influences but forges his own path from song to song on the I Hear You album. “Lost Treasure” explores being fooled more than once but not without knowing and growing from the experience. It gives the listener a break from the high energy and out comes a well told tale about rediscovery. More tasty guitar work on display here on what could be the best track on the album. If I had to choose one over them all, it would have to be this one.
“Jamshid’s Golden Gift” is a Persian inspired tribute, with an anthemic homage. And “Drunk 30 (Remix)” picks up where “Drunk 30” left off, with an after proceedings extended version of the fun-loving number, reprised with even more laughter and jovial swagger. I Hear You comes full circle for Blond Jesus, by the time it’s all said and done.
