Jensen Ackles fans grew used to watching the actor in Supernatural for several seasons, and the star has just found his perfect TV show to replace that fan-favorite, and it could go on for even longer. Supernatural debuted on September 13, 2005, ending its run after 15 seasons and 327 episodes on November 19, 2020. That is one of the best TV show runs ever.
With its 15 seasons, Supernatural made history as the longest-running fantasy series on American TV. Ackles’ Dean Winchester was a hunter who took down supernatural threats alongside his brother, Jared Padalecki’s Sam Winchester. Their chemistry continues to be one of the best in TV history, and Ackles not only brought out a powerful dramatic performance in those 15 years, but also had impeccable comedic timing as Dean.
Since Supernatural ended in 2020, Ackles’ list of TV shows has received a few new additions. The actor’s most notable work has come from Supernatural creator Eric Kripke’s The Boys, Prime Video’s superhero satire series that became one of streaming’s biggest hits ever. As Soldier Boy, Ackles quickly became a fan-favorite. Due to that, he will return to lead The Boys‘ 2027 prequel series, Vought Rising.
Ackles has also starred in shows like the Prime Video action thriller Countdown, the CBS action series Tracker, the ABC crime thriller Big Sky, the Supernatural spin-off The Winchesters, and more. Now, Ackles has set his next major starring role in TV, MGM+’s Rules of Prey, and it could rival Supernatural‘s long run in the character’s career.
Jensen Ackles’ New Crime Thriller Series Can Surpass Supernatural’s Long Run
Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced that Ackles will star in Rules of Prey, a new crime thriller series based on the John Sandford best-selling series of novels, for MGM+. This is a major announcement due to the immense potential that the project has. After all, Sandford’s Prey novels are not only successful, but they come in droves. So far, 36 Prey books, of which Rules of Prey is the first, have been released, with the franchise’s 37th entry, the upcoming Ruthless Prey, set to arrive on March 30, 2027. Ackles will play Lucas Davenport, a detective investigating murders designed to send him a message.
MGM+’s Rules of Prey comes as Ackles’ perfect Supernatural replacement. With 36 books, soon to be 37, available for the new show to pull from. Ackles could theoretically match Supernatural‘s 15-season run and even exceed it if Rules of Prey season 1 is a hit and the actor wants to stay on for the long run. Davenport keeps assuming different roles throughout the book series, which would always keep Rules of Prey fresh and allow Ackles never to get too comfortable in the role, always pushing the actor in new directions. Prime Video’s Reacher has found success in a similar situation, so Rules of Prey could too.
Will Jensen Ackles Ever Return As Dean Winchester In Another Supernatural Release?
As far as Supernatural itself goes, Rules of Prey becoming successful could be a blow to those hoping Ackles will return as Dean Winchester sooner than later. If Rules of Prey ends up becoming the long-running behemoth it has the potential to be for MGM+, then Ackles could be too busy for a Supernatural reunion. After all, Ackles’ The Boys spin-off, Vought Rising, is also planned as a multi-season series, and the actor keeps making appearances as Russell Shaw, the brother of Justin Hartley’s Colter, in CBS’ Tracker.
That said, a Supernatural revival should never be fully ruled out. After all, Ackles has already returned as Dean Winchester in the first Supernatural spin-off, The Winchesters, which he also narrated as the character and executive produced. Supernatural stars Ackles, Padalecki, and Misha Collins have also claimed over the years that they would be interested in reprising their roles, though it feels like a limited series on HBO Max or a Supernatural revival with shorter episode-orders per season might be the way to go if Jensen Ackles returns as Dean Winchester.
