Rancid Looks Back On Wolves At 35 – SPIN

Rancid is marking 30 years of …And Out Come the Wolves with an expansive new boxed set that digs deep into the 1995 punk landmark. Available for preorder now, the anniversary collection packages the original album with Alive, a previously unreleased Live in NYC recording, three long-out-of-print 7-inches and a stack of exclusive memorabilia. It will arrive on Jan. 29, 2027.

Originally released Aug. 22, 1995 by Epitaph, …And Out Come the Wolves was the Berkeley, Ca., band’s platinum-selling breakthrough and a defining document of the ’90s punk revival. Propelled by the rock radio hits “Time Bomb” (No. 8), “Ruby Soho” (No. 13) and “Roots Radical” (No. 27), the album reached No. 45 on the Billboard 200 while Rancid doubled down on the very punk ethos around which it had built its reputation: getting bigger without, in its telling, “selling out.”

In a 2025 retrospective, SPIN called Wolves “a masterclass explosion of weaving pop hooks, street punk attitude, tales of heroes and villains, gang singalongs and some of the best basslines on offer in punk,” and praising the songwriting partnership of Tim Armstrong and Lars Frederiksen at its peak. The group was the subject of a major label bidding war around this time, but opted to remain on died-in-the-wool indie Epitaph.

“I couldn’t blame the other labels for trying,” label president Brett Gurewitz told SPIN in a 1995 Rancid cover story. “Rancid has more raw songwriting talent than any band in America. And they’re my homeboys. Epitaph is a more nurturing place for them than the majors — a better place to make music. The fact is, I let them know I could sell more Rancid records than any major label. Nobody could have sold more Offspring records than we did.”

The new box looks back at that moment from multiple angles. Alive, pressed on vinyl for the first time, collects rare demos and live performances of Wolves songs recorded between 1995 and 2016, including rediscovered demos, selections from the band’s 1995 BBC session and performances from San Francisco, Tokyo, Manchester, Montreal and elsewhere. The collection was assembled with help from Rancid archivists and fans @rancidcollector and @rancid_fanatic, alongside material from the band’s own vault.

The previously unreleased Live in NYC captures “Roots Radical” and “Ruby Soho” at a Nov. 1995 performance, while the set also resurrects long-unavailable pressings of the “Roots Radical,” “Ruby Soho” and “Time Bomb” 7-inches. Those tracks were otherwise only collected on 2024’s B Sides and C Sides. The 2LP/4 7-inch package also comes with a 45 adapter, a band-signed 12-inch lithograph of the album artwork, Rancid sticker sheet, screen-printed album art patch and enamel logo pin.

Rancid has been off the road since 2024. Its most recent studio album is 2023’s Tomorrow Never Comes.
