The Mandalorian takes over Disney+ with three new releases.
Ever since the show’s first episode debuted alongside the streaming platform’s launch in November 2019, the two have been deeply intertwined with each other. Along with the characters becoming pop culture icons, there are now three seasons of The Mandalorian, and the duo even got their own movie, which came out in May and was the franchise’s first new film to be released in theaters since The Rise of Skywalker in 2019.
Following its September 2 streaming premiere on Disney+, The Mandalorian and Grogu is now the number one movie in the world after being at the top of the charts in 70 different countries, including the United States, Brazil, Canada, Colombia, Germany, Italy, Mexico, and Spain. After coming to the streaming platform on the same day, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is in sixth place for movies worldwide and second in the U.S., while Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Official Podcast is the number one show in the U.S.
LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian is a 45-minute special that retells Din Djarin and Grogu’s journey in The Mandalorian seasons 1-3 and The Book of Boba Fett as the duo reunite with old friends and face a present-day threat. In the style of LEGO Star Wars, it is a humorous retelling, with plenty of jokes unafraid to lovingly poke fun at the franchise and its first live-action series.
Gavin Hammon voices Din instead of Pedro Pascal in the LEGO special, but the rest of the cast is largely the same as in live-action, including Katee Sackhoff as Bo-Katan Kryze, Temuera Morrison as Boba Fett, Amy Sedaris as Peli Motto, Timothy Olyphant as Cobb Vanth, Bill Burr as Migs Mayfeld, and Rosario Dawson as Ahsoka Tano.
As for The Mandalorian and Grogu Official Podcast, it contains two episodes featuring director Jon Favreau, Lucasfilm President Dave Filoni, composer Ludwig Göransson, Pascal, Colonel Ward actor Sigourney Weaver, and the Grogu puppet himself. There is discussion about the making of the movie while providing behind-the-scenes insights, including what it was like to bring these characters to the big screen for the first time.
The immediate streaming success of the movie, the LEGO special, and the podcast prove how popular Din and Grogu continue to be and how they have always done well on streaming. The Mandalorian and Grogu underperformed at the box office, grossing $345.7 million worldwide against a $165 million budget, but given how well the show performed, the film was expected to bring in high viewership on Disney+. It is already delivering on this promise, and even more so with supplementary content also being automatic streaming hits.
It’s unconfirmed what is next for The Mandalorian, but the early streaming dominance and box office struggles point to that future being on Disney+ instead of in theaters. This could include a fourth season, a movie sequel that skips theaters and releases directly on the streaming service, or something else entirely that taps into the audience who have been following these characters on the platform for seven years now.
The Mandalorian and Grogu, LEGO Star Wars: The Mandalorian, and Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu Official Podcast are now streaming on Disney+.
