The Universes Beyond offshoot of Magic: The Gathering has undoubtedly been through some ups and downs since its inception, but there’s no doubt that seeing beloved franchises appear as part of the storied card game has been a whole heap of fun from a fan perspective.
Whether you’re a fan of Fallout, Final Fantasy, or even the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, there has been a little something for everyone across all of the collaborations they have completed to date. There are plenty more on the way for the rest of the year as well, including the arrival of one of the biggest sci-fi franchises in history on the scene.
As first reported by DraftSim, there are plenty of exciting collaborations on the way as part of the Universes Beyond series, with Star Trek the one that’s likely to draw the most attention on its arrival. It’s scheduled to drop on November 13 as a full set, rather than just a Secret Lair, and it features characters, ships, and locations from across the entire franchise.
Though there have been some questions about how good a fit the franchise is for the MTG format as a whole, but there have been more outlandish additions in the past, and they can make it work if the execute the balance between the different card types well.
There hasn’t been an official confirmation of what exact cards we are getting, but expect all of the usual suspects to feature in some capacity. We’ve already seen some art from the upcoming set, and those feature Kirk and the Enterprise, as well as Klingons and ships from more recent series.
That’s not all though, as The Lord of the Rings: The Hobbit is also coming in 2026, and if that set can capture some of the hype of the original franchise run, then it could easily be one of the biggest MTG releases of the year. The Hobbit is a little more whimsical than it’s bigger, younger brother, though, so the set should have quite a different tone overall.
It’s certainly an exciting year for the card game overall, and Magic: The Gathering seems to have reigned in the worst excesses of the Universes Beyond series to make it a more cogent and cohesive product. The two upcoming sets could easily continue that run of good form, we’ll just have to wait and see exactly what they’re made of.
