Released back in 2023 and giving players the chance to finally become a Hogwarts student, Hogwarts Legacy took the world by storm, becoming the best-selling game of the year, and quickly qualifying for a sequel that is currently in development courtesy of Avalanche Software. Inspired by the magical world of Harry Potter, yet featuring a story that takes place over a century before the events of the original movie and book series, Hogwarts Legacy may have sold well, but since its launch, fans have been left disappointed with a lack of content updates as both its developer and publisher focus on the next installment.
Is Hogwarts Legacy Worth It If It’s Free?
For those unwilling to pay full price for Hogwarts Legacy, especially considering the controversy surrounding the story’s creator, many were pleased to learn that the RPG would be heading to the PlayStation Plus Extra and Premium tiers back in April 2025. This would give players both the chance to save some money, whilst also getting to check out what the magical RPG had to offer. However, with players regularly criticizing the game’s lack of content, both in the base game and post-game, is Hogwarts Legacy worth it?
Well, I would consider any game that is free to download worthy of trying. After all, if you do not like it, you have not wasted any money. Additionally, Hogwarts Legacy has racked up an 8.1 User Score over on Metacritic, so it is not considered a bad game by any means. However, in recent days, players over on r/PlayStationPlus have recently been discussing the hit RPG, asking the question as to whether the game’s popularity is warranted or is it biased based on the love for the Harry Potter franchise?
Not Every PS Plus Subscribers Think Hogwarts Legacy Is Good
“Thoughts on Hogwarts Legacy?” One user recently asked. “What do people think about this game? I know it sold a ton of copies, but I don’t know; I can’t really get into it. I find that when I play I’ll do a quest or two and then get bored. It doesn’t have that “thing” that gets me hooked.” They explain that it does not feel like an open-world game like titles such as The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, and the game tasks you with going from quest to quest without encouraging exploration.
However, it seems as though fellow PlayStation Plus users agree, with the top comment reading, “I really enjoyed it. There’s filler, and side quests/tasks to be avoided as parts of the game are dull, but I had a great time overall. That said, if you’re 7 hours in, and don’t like it, it’s probably not for you. Game gets a bit ridiculous when you get the unforgivable curses, and you’re running around casting them everywhere, with professors and others not noticing or caring.”
With many fans suggesting that it would appeal to fans of the Harry Potter series more than the casual RPG fan, it seems as though Hogwarts Legacy is still dividing players even to this day. Hopefully, its upcoming sequel will not run into the same problem.
