Whenever the next iteration of PlayStation hardware comes out, it will have to rise to the occasion and take on several challenges. For one, the current hardware crisis that’s plaguing the entire tech industry.
Based on reactions on Reddit (from a report via Insider Gaming), a potential PlayStation 6 delay seems to be going over well. For now, many people (myself included) don’t want to make the switch.
PlayStation 6 Facing Delay Over RAM Price Increases
It Will Impact Way More Than Sony
According to the report, Sony could be forced to delay a future PlayStation 6 rollout due to RAM availability, which is currently one of the most significant issues facing pretty much every hardware manufacturer on the planet. At the individual level, some boutiques might be able to manage, but for a mass rollout of million-seller hardware, procuring RAM for a theoretical PlayStation 6 is going to be much harder.
While Nintendo got in while the going is good with the Switch 2 earlier this year, the current RAM shortages don’t bode well for hardware producers, especially as more and more companies shift priorities in an increasingly bullish AI world. There’s even a chance current hardware could be impacted.
The report alleges that what was once a 2027-2028 “next-gen” release window could be pushed further. Some gamers couldn’t be happier.
Gamers Aren’t Ready To Leave The PS5 Behind
Your Wallet Will Thank You
For the most part, gamers seem united in their response. The highest-rated comment muses “that’s fine, [we] don’t really need new consoles yet,” and I have to say, I agree. The PlayStation 5 era feels like it’s barely begun, and surely more exclusives can be wrung out of the platform before we’re asked to plunk down tons of cash on a new console. Sony also likely wants to avoid a situation where they’re asking people to spend nearly $1,000 on what could be an incremental upgrade.
Another user seemingly feels the same way: “Hard agree. I haven’t hit a ceiling with my enjoyment of the PS5 at all. I’m looking forward to seeing how GTA VI and Divinity will push the system further. Cyberpunk 2077 is probably the most tasking thing I run on it, and there are really no issues outside of game glitches.”
Other comments include “sounds great to me,” “better than a $1500 PS6 I guess,” and “I think people would be excited for a longer console life cycle.” Some folks are generally just unimpressed with this current generation: “We spent most of this gen making PS4 games that run better on PS5. Granted, that’s kinda the future of consoles.”
Whatever plans the PlayStation brand has, they’ll have to navigate this current environment with everyone else, developers and gamers included. No matter how everything shakes out, I would jump at the chance to have an extended PlayStation 5 era.
