Nothing to See Here, Just a GOP Politician Leaving a Loaded 9-mm Glock in the Bathroom of the Colorado State Capitol

From likening gun control legislation to the Holocaust to posing for a Christmas card brandishing an actual machine gun, Republican politicians have a long history of saying and doing extremely stupid things when it comes to firearms. That tradition continued this week when a Colorado state representative left a loaded gun in the bathroom of the capitol in Denver, i.e. his workplace.

Yes, state representative Don Wilson accidentally left his loaded 9-mm Glock in the restroom of the statehouse on Tuesday; according to USA Today, building staff found the unattended weapon at 9:30 p.m. and alerted the Colorado State Patrol, “indicating the firearm was unattended for 23 minutes before being discovered by janitorial staff,” CSP said in a statement. Wilson wrote in a statement posted online: “I want to be clear that I take full and complete accountability for the incident. I made a mistake and am very sorry. I take firearm safety very seriously. This is a humbling experience and I will reaffirm my commitment to responsible handling procedures.”

According to USA Today, Wilson got his gun back after law enforcement concluded no criminal charges were pending following the incident. Not surprisingly, Wilson’s Democratic colleagues noted that this whole thing was one of the many reasons stricter gun control legislation is necessary. “The consequences of leaving a firearm unattended in a public space could be very serious,” state representative Julie McCluskie said. “This should not have happened and cannot happen again, and this is why our caucus is pursuing legislation to prohibit carrying firearms in the Capitol.”
