If you have ever wanted to be told, over and over again, how great Justin Bieber is, have we got the trailer for you.
Justin Bieber: Our World, a forthcoming documentary, follows the international pop sensation as he prepares to close out 2020 with a COVID-era livestream concert on New Year’s Eve. That gig, which was called T-Mobile Presents New Year’s Eve Live With Justin Bieber, was his first live performance since he canceled the final 14 shows of his 2017 tour. The concert was streamed to T-Mobile subscribers for free through their app or cost Beliebers $25.
The trailer for Our World features Bieber collaborators touting how much of a leader Justin is and how he has grown from a teen heartthrob into a man. There’s a shot of a cute dog and sped-up images of an elaborate stage being built on the roof of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. We also see the show-biz-in-his-blood Bieber anticipating the big show and smiling as he says, “I’m just gonna wanna move.”
In addition to images of Bieber performing alongside backup dancers and lasers, he’s captured sarcastically commenting that “life is only about content, it isn’t about the condition of your soul.” Based on one moment in the trailer, in which a woman reports “it’s crashing,” it appears the film will touch upon the very public technical woes that troubled some home streamers the night of the concert. (Some “friends and family” were invited to see the New Year’s show in person, which involved checking into rooms at the Hilton with a max capacity of four, limited interaction with other guests, and a nice spread courtesy of T-Mobile.)
In mid-September, there was a tastemaker’s screening in New York City for Our World, where Bieber “stood for much of its 95-minute run time, at times dancing along to his own songs and marching in front of the screen, but mostly just standing with his arms outstretched like Jesus Christ himself,” according to USA Today.
“I feel like it captures me actually becoming a leader,” he told that select audience, adding that “God is in control. And I think right now with this pandemic and all of the crazy things that are happening in this world, one thing is for certain and that is we are not in control.”
The film was directed by Michael D. Ratner, who has worked with Bieber on numerous past projects. Ratner has also worked with Demi Lovato and Kevin Hart and created the Hunter S. Thompson-Ralph Steadman 30 for 30 short Gonzo @ The Derby.
Justin Bieber: Our World will be available to stream on Amazon Prime Video starting Oct. 8.
