How Kathryn Hahn’s Belted Look Captured Effortless Cool at the Emmys

When Kathryn Hahn arrived at Sunday night’s Emmy Awards, she may have embodied a seemingly effortless glamour, but in reality, her uncomplicated look was months in the making.

Dressed in a Lanvin pantsuit paired with a black leather oversized belt, Hahn, who was nominated for an Emmy for her role in WandaVision, relied on her stylists Jill Lincoln and Jordan Johnson to create the ensemble.

“This was the first look we requested after she was nominated,” Lincoln and Johnson recently explained to Vanity Fair. “She had been filming Knives Out in Europe all summer and just got back this week. It was hard to ask designers to hold pieces for us since there have been a zillion events going on in the past month. We had a very curated fitting of pieces we knew we loved and we landed on our original favorite…which isn’t abnormal for us!”

Dressing Hahn in Lanvin was an easy decision for the styling duo who say that the actress’s style—which they consider “not too precious but subtly classic with high fashion tones”—often mimics their own.

“Of all of our clients through the years, Kathryn is most aligned with our personal styles so dressing Kathryn is like…dressing ourselves, which clearly makes things a bit easier. She loves new/newish emerging designers, as well as old friends like Lanvin with a slightly intellectual perspective,” they explained.

An added bonus? The pantsuit, which the team paired with pointed-toe pumps from Tamara Mellon and jewelry from Briony Raymond, was “also quite comfortable (relatively speaking) which is also a score when planning an outfit for a long seated evening!”

And then came the glam. Makeup artist Jo Baker used quintessential French girl Lou Doillon as inspiration for Hahn’s fresh-faced look. “The whole point was to show a simple, effortless, casual approach to makeup, which brings out her natural features and also suits her uber cool,” Baker said.

“I wanted to show off Kathryn’s natural beauty,” she said. “Using soft cream shadow in gentle smoke tone around her outer lash line brings a flattering dimension to her eyes without looking makeup-y.”

To achieve that “clean, radiant and healthy” appearance, Baker opted for a simple soft powder lip using signature #1 lip powder palette from Rouje, which she calls “a super cool Parisienne cult cool makeup brand.”

The next step in Hahn’s homage to Doillon was her cool, undone hairstyle created by Marilee Albin, who spent just over an hour to attain the ideal texture.

Using products from Better Not Younger, Roz and Davines, Albin began with a blow-dry and then “sprayed and scrunched the hair” before sweeping it one side to accomplish what she calls an “effortlessly sexy, ‘is it blow-dried or is it air-dried?’” look.

The pursuit of cool was evident everywhere, even in the manicure created by celebrity nail stylist Jenna Hipp, who selected a shade ideal for photo ops.

“We chose OPI Midnight in Moscow, a charcoal nail polish with a hint of maroon shine to reflect the camera flash,” Hipp said, adding that she paired the rich, moody color with the brand’s Natural Nail Base Coat and Brilliant Top Coat for “an added high gloss effect.”

For an added glow, Hipp added a bit of Josie Maran Moonbeam highlighter. “With a fluffy brush, I swipe the fronts of hands and up the forearm for a cool, dewy look on the red carpet.”
