‘Promising Young Woman’ Nominated for Multiple Oscars Including Best Picture and Best Actress

While not necessarily a horror film, it’s worth noting here on Bloody Disgusting this morning that Emerald Fennell‘s rape-revenge drama/thriller Promising Young Woman is now officially an Oscar nominee, with the nominations for this year’s Academy Awards being announced this morning. The film scored several big nominations, including “Best Picture.”

Promising Young Woman is nominated in the following categories:

  • Best Picture
  • Best Director – Emerald Fennell
  • Best Actress – Carey Mulligan
  • Best Original Screenplay – Emerald Fennell
  • Best Film Editing

Carey Mulligan stars as Cassandra in Promising Young Woman, a woman traumatized by a tragic event in her past who seeks out vengeance against those who cross her path.

Meagan Navarro wrote in a piece for BD earlier this year, “Promising Young Woman is another entry in a growing trend of modern rape-revenge films that have departed horror in favor of weaponizing other genre tropes to support their core themes. While Fennell’s debut continues to inspire debate over its messaging, it succeeds in demonstrating that a rape-revenge film doesn’t have to belong to horror to elicit a lingering, visceral response.”

If you haven’t seen it, you can watch Promising Young Woman at home tonight. The movie is available for rent/purchase via VOD, and it’s actually coming to DVD/Blu-ray tomorrow.

Elsewhere on the genre front, Love and Monsters was nominated for “Best Visual Effects.”
