Questlove’s Summer of Soul Documentary Acquired by Hulu and Searchlight Pictures

Last month, Questlove premiered his documentary Summer of Soul (…Or, When the Revolution Could Not Be Televised) the 2021 Sundance Film Festival. After taking home the U.S. Documentary Competition’s Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award, Hulu and Searchlight Pictures have acquired the film, as Variety reports. The doc will be released theatrically and on streaming, although dates have not yet been announced.

Summer of Soul marks Questlove’s directorial debut. The film centers on the 1969 Harlem Cultural Festival, and features archival footage that remained unseen for 50 years. Subjects include Stevie Wonder, the Staples Singers, Nina Simone, Sly and the Family Stone, and more.
