The Best Christmas Movies for Escaping 2020

If you are familiar with the recent work of Candace Cameron Bure, know exactly what to expect when a character in a movie arrives in a snowy small town, or like having something to watch while wrapping presents, you’re probably intimately familiar with the past decade’s explosion in original holiday movies. You’re also in good company with Who? Weekly podcast cohosts Bobby Finger and Lindsey Weber, who wrote an article for Vanity Fair earlier this month breaking down this year’s crop, from the Netflix originals that come with added star power to the options made by the reigning champion of the form, Lifetime.

On this week’s Little Gold Men podcast, Bobby and Lindsey join Katey Rich and Joanna Robinson to discuss just what goes into making Hallmark and Lifetime holiday movies, why they’ve become so dominant, and which titles can serve as the right kind of escapism. They also talk about some more traditional holiday classics (Love Actually, White Christmas, you know the drill) and a few options that deserve to be considered—why not ring in the season with Lord of the Rings?

The episode also includes a discussion with Richard Lawson about a slew of new movies, including The Midnight Sky, News of the World, Promising Young Woman, Soul, and Wonder Woman 1984, most of which can be viewed from the comfort of your Christmas P.J.s. They also discuss the awards announcements from critics groups in New York, Los Angeles, and Chicago, and how some underdog contenders like First Cow and Sound of Metal might be getting a boost when the awards season fully gets underway next year.

Finally, the episode ends with a conversation between Julie Miller and Crown star Emma Corrin, who discusses the Princess Diana moment she couldn’t believe was real, whether she’ll swap notes with Elizabeth Debicki on portraying the princess, and much more.
