Kardashian has been generating spirited discussion ever since her very first Met Gala appearance in 2013, when she attended with then-partner Kanye West, pregnant with their first child, North West, wearing a jersey floral custom Givenchy gown complete with turtleneck, long sleeves, and perfectly matched gloves and shoes of the same print. She was instantly memed in online reactions and admitted to Vogue in an interview years later that “I was crying, like, the whole way home because I just couldn’t believe it. There were all these memes about me and this couch.”
With the distance of time, however, “Now I love it, now it’s sick,” she said.
With the exception of the 2020 Met Gala, which was canceled in the face of the COVID-19 pandemic, Kardashian has been a consistent guest at the gala since that first year, donning memorable looks like the Thierry Mugler “wet dress” in 2019, a getup that felt almost anatomically impossible, and her all-black 2021 Balenciaga T-shirt dress, which shrouded her head to toe—including her face.
When it comes to controversial Met Gala looks, it’s hard to keep up with Kardashian.
