Anna Wintour Helped Six’s Toby Marlow Find Their 2022 Tony Award Outfit

Toby Marlow, the first nonbinary composer-lyricist to win a Tony Award for best score for their show Six, pulled their glamorous look together for the evening with a little help from Anna Wintour.

Marlow tells Vanity Fair via email that as soon as they found out they would be attending this year’s Tonys, “I knew I wanted to wear a massive gorgeous gown—very glamorous, also very sexy, bold floor-length vibes. Not every day you go the bloody Tonys, am I right?” The composer adds that they and Six co-creator Lucy Moss also knew from the very beginning that they “wanted to wear complimentary outfits, like the same designer, and maybe the same color or shape, basically so we looked like an absolute power duo / married couple who love to match.”

Thanks to Wintour, they were introduced to the brand Wiederhoeft, and right away they knew the designer would be the perfect match. Marlow explains, “We met with Jackson at Vogue, and the second we saw this gorgeous pink lamé gown and the matching shirt of the same material—we were in love.” But they weren’t done there, “We then punked it up a bit with the long, black, jeweled gloves, and my gorgeous black leather SYRO boots. And then for jewelry, totally to my surprise, my grandparents (who we were my guests to the Tonys!) brought with them a diamond necklace and earrings that belonged to my great-grandmother (my grandma refers to them as ‘the Crown Jewels’). They hold a lot of sentimental value in my family, and so it felt really special to wear them to such a special occasion, I felt I had all my family with me. All in all, totally obsessed and in love with the look.” Marlow also made sure to give a special shout out to their hairstylist Kennedy Trisler and makeup artist Charmey Pinette “for making me look hot.”

The composer says their favorite part of their outfit for the evening had to be “the train. It made me feel like an absolute queen. The moments where I had to pick up the front to walk up the stairs or pick up the back to dance…ugh, I’ve literally never felt more glamorous in my life. Shoutout to gorgeous genius designer Jackson Wiederhoeft!”

And when it comes to whose style they admire, Marlow admits that it’s their friends and family who inspire them most. “[Moss] always looks perfect and I literally couldn’t get over how bloody handsome she looked last night. Also my little sister Annabel Marlow has the best wardrobe I know and also always looks perfect. Both have impeccable taste and I aim to look half as good as them on a daily basis.” They also rely on Moss to get red carpet ready, explaining that their pre-show ritual is to “check to see if either of us have anything in our teeth. Luckily, last night, I think we were all good.”
