Sex and the City Reboot Teases Where the Ladies Are Now

And Just Like That… it’s like Samantha was never there at all.

The time for brunch, kooky accessories, and soaring B-roll of New York City has arrived—which is to say, the teaser for And Just Like That, the Sex and the City reboot, is finally here. In this first short glimpse of the revival (or as the teaser puts it, a “new chapter” of SATC), Carrie, Miranda, and Charlotte (sans Samantha) are back and revisiting familiar stomping grounds, reuniting with old friends, and making several new ones along the away.

The teaser, narrated by Carrie, is a melange of footage showing the three ladies in their domain. Charlotte spruces up some flowers in her classic Park Avenue apartment, with perfect Harry and daughter Lily in tow. Carrie plants a big kiss on Mr. Big and goes for a stroll with Stanford (the late Willie Garson). Miranda emerges from the subway and later brings it in for a group hug with precious Steve and grown-up son Brady. Plenty of other familiar faces pop up in the trailer too, including: Anthony Marentino (who’s seen joining the three ladies for brunch, neatly taking Samantha’s old spot) and Natasha Naginsky, Big’s ex-wife, who’s seen for just a moment glowering through a window. Also, Bitsy von Muffling is there!

The teaser also offers glimpses at the show’s key newcomers. Sara Ramirez makes their debut as Che Diaz, a non-binary comedian who interviews Carrie for their podcast. They’re also seen onstage in one brief moment from the teaser; perhaps Ramirez’s character is doing stand-up, or perhaps the show found a way to tap into their Broadway talent and will somehow get them to sing a little something. If Grey’s Anatomy can design a whole musical episode around Ramirez’s voice, then And Just Like That can wrangle one measly little song, right?

Then come three other new editions. Nicole Ari Parker makes her debut as a new friend, seen in the teaser mostly hanging out with Charlotte. Karen Pittman pops up and hangs out with Miranda, strolling around a park and hanging out in the subway. Sarita Choudhury also pops up, kicking it with Carrie in her apartment. It seems like what the show lost in Samantha, they made up for by giving each lady a brand new satellite.

Speaking of: the teaser doesn’t hint at how the show decided to write off Samantha, played by Kim Cattrall, who declined to return and has had some sharp words for Parker and co. over the years. We have long had our theories about what the writers will do about her departure; killing her off is too grim for a show that tends toward the sweet and sentimental, but giving her a glorious send-off seems unrealistic, considering how much Cattrall has bad-mouthed the series. HBO president Casey Bloys has hinted that she’ll simply fade away from the story. After all, friendships come and go in life. When And Just Like That debuts on Dec. 9, it seems Samantha will just be a distant memory—an old friend who drifts away from the pack, leaving a slew of fond, libidinous tales in her wake.
