Much like her ex-boyfriend Elon Musk, Grimes is well-versed in the fine art of internet memes. So while it may have looked like she was just educating herself on the foundational arguments of communism over the weekend when she was photographed reading The Communist Manifesto by Karl Marx, the pop star insists she was actually just trolling.
On Sunday, Grimes posted a screenshot on her Instagram of a not-so-candid photo of her leaning against a street sign in Los Angeles with her Marx book cracked open while wearing a very Dune-inspired bodysuit, leggings, and matching hooded duster. She also shared a screenshot of a New York Post headline that reads, “Grimes seen reading Karl Marx following split with world’s richest man Elon Musk.” She explained the context of the images in the caption, writing, “I was really stressed when paparazzi wouldn’t stop following me this wk but then I realized it was opportunity to troll…i swear this headline omg wtf haha im dead.”
She continued, “Full disclosure I’m still living with e and I am not a communist (although there are some very smart ideas in this book -but personally I’m more interested in a radical decentralized ubi that I think could potentially be achieved thru crypto and gaming but I haven’t ironed that idea out enough yet to explain it. Regardless my opinions on politics are difficult to describe because the political systems that inspire me the most have not yet been implemented).” She added that, “if paparazzi keep chasing me perhaps I will try to think of more ways to meme – suggestions welcome!”
Despite still living together, Musk confirmed the news of their breakup two weeks ago, telling Page Six, “We are semi-separated but still love each other, see each other frequently and are on great terms. It’s mostly that my work at SpaceX and Tesla requires me to be primarily in Texas or traveling overseas and her work is primarily in LA. She’s staying with me now and Baby X is in the adjacent room.” The singer also spoke to the outlet, jokingly adding, “I’ll be colonizing [one of Jupiter’s moons] Europa separately from Elon for the lesbian space commune.”
