Britney Spears has joked that her “a**hole” boyfriend Sam Asghari’s proposal was “way overdue”.
The singer proved that she’s not above making fun of her boyfriend shortly after she and Asghari shared the news that they had gotten engaged.
Reflecting on the announcement on Monday (13 September), Britney Spears wrote: “Words can’t even say how shocked I am,” alongside an engagement ring emoji.
The “Stronger” singer shared a picture of her fiancé Sam Asghari taken as part of a Men’s Health photoshoot, which shows him suspended mid-jump.
She continued: “Although the a**hole was way overdue… it was definitely worth the wait… yes world… that beautiful f**king man in that picture is MINE.
“I’m so blessed it’s insane,” she added, alongside a series of rose emojis.
Asghari commented on Spears post, simply writing: “Wayyyyy overdueee.”
The happy couple announced their engagement on Instagram on Sunday (12 September). Both shared adorable snaps of themselves posing, while Spears showed off her huge engagement ring to the camera.
The gorgeous ring was created by New York designer Roman Malayev and is a “one-of-a-kind”, according to Page Six. The word “lioness” – Asghari’s nickname for Spears – is engraved on the inside of the ring.
Britney Spears claimed her conservatorship blocked her from marrying Sam Asghari
Britney Spears first met Asghari in 2016 on the set of a music video and their relationship quickly blossomed.
Judging by their Instagram accounts, the couple couldn’t have been happier over the last few years – however, Spears spent that time secretly railing against the court-ordered conservatorship that was put in place in 2008 following her mental health crisis.
The conservatorship was the focus of significant fan attention in recent years, with many in the “Free Britney” movement suggesting that the singer was being held captive by the arrangement.
Spears tended to ignore the speculation – but that all changed in June when she spoke out about her legal situation for the first time during a virtual court appearance.
Speaking to a Los Angeles judge, Spears spoke at length about the legal arrangement that has allowed her father to control much of her life for more than a decade.
There was widespread shock when she characterised the conservatorship as “abusive”, adding that those in charge of her life had stopped her from marrying Asghari and from starting a family with him.
Damningly, she also claimed that she had been blocked from removing a contraceptive device – meaning that she was unable to get pregnant.
That court appearance led to significant change for Spears. Since then, she appears to have enjoyed greater freedom – and she has become much more vocal on social media.
While her Instagram posts were once vague and cryptic, they are now full of detail about her personal life – and she hasn’t been afraid to call out individual members of her family either.
Britney Spears’ conservators have not clarified whether they prevented her from marrying Asghari or from starting a family with him – however, the couple’s recent engagement suggests that something has changed behind the scenes.
