Even the most casual fans now know that it usually pays off to stick around for the closing credits of anything Marvel. And while this week’s Loki finale didn’t introduce any new characters, we did get a very brief moment of a stamp hitting a document—and the official announcement of Loki Season 2. No word yet on when that might be.
Rumors of a second season for Loki have been in the air ever since Deadline announced that head writer Michael Waldron had been signed for an overall deal at Disney. But Marvel, as is their wont, wouldn’t officially confirm that a Season 2 was a reality. Still, that Waldron announcement also included the news that in addition to being hired right out of the Loki writer’s room to co-author the upcoming Doctor Strange sequel, Waldron had been hired by Marvel chief Kevin Feige to work on his highly secretive Star Wars project. In other words, whatever Feige saw in Loki mightily impressed him.
So while this is the first time one of Marvel’s Disney+ shows has gotten a second season, it should not be too surprising to anyone following Waldron’s rapid ascension. And without spoiling the Loki Season 1 finale, it’s pretty safe to say Tom Hiddleston’s adventures in the TVA end in a massive cliffhanger. But even though Loki Season 2 could pick up precisely where Season 1 left off, that seems unlikely, given the massive ripples and consequences the events of the finale will send through the MCU. Once we see how the next few movies and shows shape up, we’ll be able to make some more educated guesses as to what tricks the Lokis might have up their sleeves in Season 2.
