F9’s Dominance Continues At Box Office

Boss Baby: Family Business and The Forever Purge win silver and bronze, a sweep for Universal Pictures.

America knows what it likes, and it likes to go fast. To celebrate the nation’s birthday, audiences continued to buy tickets to see Vin Diesel and company overuse fossil fuels this 4th of July weekend. The 10th entry in the racing and international espionage Fast and Furious franchise, F9: The Fast Saga, once again lapped the competition, coming in first at the weekend box office.

The film’s four-day earnings estimate is $30.1 million, according to the Hollywood Reporter. That brings the domestic tally to $123.2 million, with F9 racing past $500 million globally. (The movie opened in overseas markets five weeks before it did in the United States.)

In second place came Boss Baby: Family Business, the Alec Baldwin-led animated flick in which a baby is also a boss. Its estimated four-day domestic take is $20 million. The family-friendly title is also available to stream via a paid subscription to Peacock.

Third place went to The Forever Purge, the fifth entry in the action-horror series very loosely inspired by an old Star Trek episode. (The same one that gave Ben Stiller the name of his production company.)

In a rare feat, each of the top three films is distributed by Universal Pictures. No doubt some sparkling white wine will be uncorked in Universal City when everyone returns to work on Tuesday.
