Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid Reunite for Josie and the Pussycats’s 20th.

“I really thought I was a rock star!”

Wigs, trampolines, and Eugene Levy. These are just a few of the topics Rachael Leigh Cook, Rosario Dawson, and Tara Reid discussed in a recent virtual reunion that Universal Pictures put out on their YouTube page celebrating the 20th anniversary of the release of Josie and the Pussycats.

Yes, that’s right, the Harry Elfont and Deborah Kaplan power-pop musical based on the Hanna-Barbera cartoon (which itself was based on Archie Comics characters) is now old enough to vote by two years.

While the film was far from a box office or critical success at its release, it has grown into a cult favorite over the years. So much so that a vinyl re-release of the Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds-produced soundtrack, in which Kay Hanley of Letters to Cleo sang songs written by Jane Wiedlin, Anna Waronker, Adam Schlesinger, Adam Duritz and others came out in 2017.

In the reunion video, the three actresses gush about how the film, which lampooned corporate sponsorship in music, was ahead of its time in showing, as Reid put it, “women supporting women.”

Dawson said working with two fellow leading actresses and a 50 percent female directing team was “precious” and “profound.”

The trio had rewatched the film a day before the chat, and declared a continuing love and friendship for one another. “I know we lead different lives now, but, I’ve got you guys forever; you can call me anytime, I will bail you out of jail, I will drive you to the airport.” Cook said.

Josie and the Pussycats is available to stream on HBO Max. Josie and the Pussycats in Outer Space is just something we dreamed, right?
