Josh Hawley Shrugs Off Horrifying Footage of Capitol Attack on Second Day of Impeachment Trial

Most thinking, feeling people, upon seeing such barbaric imagery and hearing the plans rioters made after being encouraged by the president, would undoubtedly be moved to do something like, say, convict Donald Trump. Some might even be visibly horrified! And then you have the Republican Party, which has not only made it clear that it’s going to acquit Trump no matter what, but which apparently can’t even summon the energy to pretend like it gives a sh-t about what went down on January 6:

According to NBC’s Garrett Haake, Hawley was not only flipping through paperwork while Democrats presented their case but “sitting up in the gallery with his feet up on the seat in front of him.” In fact, it’s a wonder he didn’t spend the entire time filing his nails and yelling, “BO-RING,” though there are still several more days of the trial, so give him time.

That obnoxious display of indifference followed similar behavior by Trump loyalists on the first day of the trial, per the Post

Almost every senatorial eye in the chamber was glued to the screens as lead House manager Jamie Raskin (D-Md.) played a 13-minute video depicting the events of January 6 to introduce the impeachment case against Trump—with a few notable exceptions. While the screen showed demonstrators marching on the Capitol, Senator Rand Paul (R-Ky.) looked down at the pad of lined paper in his lap, where he had already begun doodling with a pencil. Behind him, Senator Rick Scott (R-Fla.) studied papers in his lap, taking only the tiniest glimpses at the screen to his right. A few seats over, Senator Tom Cotton (R-Ark.) also focused most of his attention on papers in front of him instead of on the images depicting the insurrection at the Capitol, and a few seats from him, Senator Marco Rubio (R-Fla.) did the same.

Anyway, to be fair, it’s probably not reasonable to expect people like Hawley to have an emotional reaction to the footage showed by Democrats, given the fact that, as one of the lawmakers who objected to the certification of Joe Biden’s win, he was basically an accomplice in on the crime. Or as Representative Cori Bush noted:
