Enter the glitter-filled world of Ryan Murphy’s film adaptation of 2018 Broadway comedy The Prom, in which New York City actors head to Indiana to stand behind a teen who wants to take her girlfriend to the high school prom—both to help her, and to give themselves a much-needed PR boost. As befits a bright and shiny movie musical, the costumes in the show are over-the-top at every turn. “Ryan wanted it to feel like a big Broadway musical. He has a specific color palette that all the departments adhered to,” said costume designer Lou Eyrich. The rule of thumb was “when you think you have enough, add a little more” – and we aren’t mad at it! The Vanity Fair fashion team is taking the opportunity to relive our prom night with extra sparkle, even if it’s just a glittery face mask.
DEE DEE (MERYL STREEP) AND BARRY (JAMES CORDEN)
Brazen, ambitious, confident— Dee Dee knows how to keep it chic at every occasion. This Saint Laurent Sheer Midi Dress and Kenneth Jay Lane crystal necklace scream Broadway star! As for Barry, Eyrich calls him “the Barneys shopper before Barneys was no more.” You could definitely find this Paul Stuward velvet evening blazer and Ralph Lauren bowtie at the New York institution— we miss it so.
ANGIE (NICOLE KIDMAN) AND TRENT (ANDREW RANNELLS)
Kidman’s chorus girl character has a touch of Bridgett Bardot and Ann-Margret, but with a modern touch, according to Eyrich. This Halpern glittered jumpsuit and Adriana Orsini earrings will make sure her colorful character gets the shine she deserves. And Trent loves to flaunt his Juilliard credentials— and nothing says an evening in New York better than a velvet Armani blazer.
ALYSSA (ARIANA DEBOSE) AND MRS. GREENE (KERRY WASHINGTON)
Always put together in her pastel tones, we know Alyssa would approve of this Galvan dress, and we spiced it up with a Zales tennis bracelet that is still guaranteed to bring a little sparkle to any room.
ANGIE AND EMMA (JO ELLEN PELLMAN)
