If you’re just tuning in to the latest edition of our long national nightmare, a brief recap: After downplaying COVID-19 for months, letting the virus gain a foothold in the country, and contributing to the deaths of over 200,000 in the U.S., Donald Trump tested positive for coronavirus himself. This was in no way surprising and, in fact, was completely inevitable given his disdain for mask wearing and social distancing and his insistence on holding rallies and other events that packed people in shoulder to shoulder, effectively acting as a giant “fuck you” to the recommendations of numerous health experts, including those at his own CDC. While at the hospital with a case that necessitated supplemental oxygen and experimental drugs, he forced members of the Secret Service to sit in a hermetically sealed vehicle so he could go on a joyride. Days after returning to the White House, he held a huge rally. The administration has also refused to say when he last tested negative before testing positive, which would let people who interacted with him in the days leading up to his diagnosis know if their health could be at risk. And at this point dozens of people (and counting) in his inner circle have contracted COVID-19.
On the flip side, it’s been months since Joe Biden stopped doing the kind of traditional campaign events that would bring people into dangerous proximity, and he is regularly seen wearing a mask and practicing social distancing. He also, once again, tested negative for COVID-19 today, a result he shared with the media.
So yeah, you can probably guess where we’re going with this:
Yes, that’s Donald Trump (1) baselessly claiming that someone else has been irresponsible when it comes to COVID-19 safeguards, and (2) complaining that the “Fake News” media hasn’t covered this nonexistent event. (On a separate, more disturbing note, it’s entirely unclear what “playing ‘fingers’” is or why the president thinks it’s a commonly used expression.)
In addition to being the guy who’s made flouting coronavirus guidelines both a campaign policy and a lifestyle, Trump, you may recall, has also spent months mocking Biden for taking the virus seriously, claiming that the former vice president has been hiding in his “basement.” He also took the time during the first presidential debate to mock Biden for his insistence on mask usage:
Additionally, it was less than a week ago that the Trump campaign backed out of the second debate because apparently it wasn’t worth doing if there wasn’t a chance of infecting Biden. Oh, and at present, he’s seemingly trying to preside over another super-spreader event.
And just to close the loop here, no, he’s not wearing a mask, because those are for both suckers and people who attacked their opponent the same day for supposedly improperly using one:
