Cardi B Defends Casting Kylie Jenner in “WAP” Music Video

While the release of Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion‘s new song “WAP” was a huge success last week, Kylie Jenner‘s cameo in the music video was met with considerably less enthusiasm

Jenner was one of six women to play a featured role, alongside Normani, Rosalía, Mulatto, Sukihana, and Rubi Rose. Jenner, however, was the only white woman featured. One Twitter user wrote, “Normani did ALL this and Kylie walked down the hall and opened a door. If that’s not a perfect visual indication of Black women having to do the most and white women do the bare minimum to get somewhere, I don’t know what is.”

That tweet prompted Cardi to reply in a string of since-deleted tweets, “Normani is one of the best female artist that dances like she dances her fuckin ass off! Why would she open a door? Please tell me how that would make sense? The best part of the song is the beat & hook it what makes you want to shake your ass.”

“Not everything is about race,” she continued. “Theres issues out here in the world that it is about race that I preach all the time about. This is not about fuckin race.” She added that Travis Scott, the father of Kylie’s daughter Stormi, and Cardi’s husband, Offset, are good friends and the reality star has been nothing but kind to her family.

The rapper wrote, “Why did i put Kylie on my music video? she treated my sister and daughter so lovely at her kid bday party. Travis and Set are real close and Kris Jenner have giving me advice on certain things I ask for and her husband real cool with mine.”

But Cardi’s defense of her casting decision hasn’t stopped her fans from photoshopping in their own dream celebrity cameos to replace Kylie. Viola Davis shared one of these images in which a fan placed her face on Jenner’s body, asking,“Who did this?” with a crying and heart-eyes emoji. The actress also shared a fan edit of herself dancing on How to Get Away with Murder with scenes from the music video and the hashtag #HowToGetAwayWithWAP. Cardi retweeted the video, writing, “I’m so fan out right now ya don’t even know.”
