Cher, With Newfound Mask Anonymity, Heads to Sephora

Cher, a famously extremely online woman, is now extremely offline too. She’s extremely at Sephora, for example. Look, here are three photos:

No clue if this is an ad for Sephora (though I’ve reached out to check), but part of me thinks this is just an ad for the kind of lifestyle made possible with the appropriate PPE worn during a pandemic. She heard the clarion call to wear a mask, and she is out here modeling good behavior. Although, of course, you know, maybe don’t go shopping indoors if you’re Cher’s age, and it’s not an emergency. But if you do, mask up! And the hands? She double bags them.

In response to one user’s supportive message about Cher’s COVID take, she said, “OF COURSE I LOVE WEARING MASK.I CAN JUST RUN TO MARKET ,RUN AROUND SEPHORA,& GO TO DRS. ,& NO ONE KNOWS WHO I AM. [Pray] 4 DAY WE DONT NEED TO WEAR THEM [sic].”

Cher, just running to the market! Cher, just heading to Sephora to grab some balm or cream or concealer! Cher, just popping over to the doctor! Can you imagine after all this time living her life doing whatever one does when one is Cher and living in her enormous home, that she’s just out? And about?

The majority of people at her local Sephora, et. al., probably won’t recognize her when she’s covered from head to toe, but if it’s anonymity she’s after, the reflective aviators and newsboy cap, plus snakeskin jacket and Adidas track pants isn’t it. It screams, “I am not Cher!” Which of course reads as “I am Cher.” Anonymity probably involves a lot less screaming, which Cher is, bless her gorgeous heart, incapable of. Look at her Twitter. It looks like the caps lock got stuck sometime in ’09 and she never looked back. When tweeted that she was able to roam free in Sephora, she included photos.

So let Cher have this one, I guess. If it’s anonymity she’s feeling, it’s anonymity she has. She’s living a new sort of life that must have been impossible for decades. Masks (and sunglasses and newsboy caps)! Anonymity for the famous, protection for all. They’re maybe the great democratizer.
