What’s New on HBO Max for August 2020

With WarnerMedia finally throwing in the towel on the idea that Christopher Nolan’s Tenet will arrive in U.S. movie theaters this summer, fans of the director can find some solace in corporation’s nascent streaming service, HBO Max. On Monday, WarnerMedia announced the titles coming to HBO Max in August—and leading the charge is The Dark Knight, Nolan’s industry-changing superhero blockbuster.

The Dark Knight is not the only Nolan film coming to HBO Max next month. The filmmaker’s first exploration of Gotham City, 2005’s Batman Begins, will also join the streaming service’s roster. All told, six total Batman films will debut on HBO Max in August, including Batman, Batman Returns, Batman Forever, and Batman & Robin. Some additional curated highlights include:

The Fugitive: Released 27 years ago this August, the Harrison Ford thriller remains one of the most unimpeachable summer blockbusters of the modern era. Come for Tommy Lee Jones explaining how little he cares, but stay for the early small supporting parts for future stars Julianne Moore and Jane Lynch.

Idiocracy: Mike Judge’s 2005 satire is about a man and woman who are put into a state of suspended animation and wake up after 500 years to find America collapsed and overrun by anti-intellectualism, bad faith tomfoolery, and just general idiocy. Fifteen years later, the most surprising thing about Idiocracy is the optimism of its timeline.

Ocean’s Eleven: Brad Pitt and George Clooney should make another movie together.

My Blue Heaven: In the late 1980s, when Nicholas Pileggi was writing what would become Goodfellas, Pillegi’s wife, the legendary Nora Ephron, put together her own screenplay about the life of mobster Henry Hill. The result was My Blue Heaven, a mobster comedy about a crook (Steve Martin) put into the Witness Protection Program after ratting out his fellow criminals. (Rick Moranis plays an FBI agent tasked with keeping Martin’s out-sized Italian stereotype in line.) “On the reality scale, if Raging Bull is a 10, My Blue Heaven is somewhere in the lower numbers,” Ephron once told the New York Times. Here is the punchline: The film, which pretty much picks up after the events of Goodfellas ends (and notably is not specifically about Hill), was released a month before Martin Scorsese’s classic told the first part of its story.

But beyond those notable debuts—which also includes Birds of Prey, Richard Jewell, and the HBO Max original film American Pickle with Seth Rogen—the big news for subscribers is what’s exiting the service in August. All eight Harry Potter films, which were a surprise addition to HBO Max at launc—on account of the series’ on-air and digital rights belonging to NBCUniversal through April 2025—will leave HBO Max on August 25.
