Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith Chuckle About Their Complicated Marriage

“We ride together, we die together. Bad marriage for life!”

So joked Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith in what can only be called a very unusual episode of Red Table Talk.

The Facebook Watch show, which normally stars Jada, her daughter Willow, and her mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris, confronted a brewing scandal head-on Friday. Jada and Will spoke bluntly about “a very personal journey that became very public.”

During their discussion, the 48-year-old actress confessed that four-and-a-half years ago, she started a relationship with 27-year-old musician August Alsina. They met through Will and Jada’s son, Jaden Smith; at the time, Jada said, Alsina “was really sick.” When she and Alsina began seeing each other, the Smiths were, as Jada put it, “going through a difficult time.” (“I was done with you,” is how Will described the period.)

The Smiths clarified during their chat that they were amicably separated then—and while previous language about Jada and Alsina’s “entanglement” indicated that Will had given her “permission” to have a relationship outside of their marriage, Jada clarified Friday that “the only person that can give permission in that circumstance is myself.”

The dialogue included this impromptu recitation of a popular Bad Boys phrase, but with an alteration.
