British Government Exempts Tentpole Film Productions From Quarantine Rules

As film and television production founders in the United States, cameras are preparing to roll across the pond.

The British government will exempt a group of studio tentpoles from quarantine rules, and will allow them to continue shooting, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Among them are Paramount’s Mission: Impossible sequels and Universal’s next entry in the Jurassic World series.

U.K. Culture Secretary Oliver Dowden boasted a zoom selfie with Tom Cruise while announcing the news.

Cruise and director Christopher McQuarrie were shooting the seventh and eighth entries in the M:I series at Warner Bros.’s Leavesden Studios back-to-back before the coronavirus pandemic shut the production down. Jurassic World: Dominion was at Pinewood prior to going on hiatus.

The new rules will allow “a limited number of essential cast and crew to travel to the U.K. without needing to quarantine for 14 days.” This is an exemption to Britain’s “low-risk only” rule, which lists 50 nations from which visitors can come without needing to isolate beginning July 10th. The United States is pointedly not in that group.

Adrian Wootton, Chief Executive of the British Film Commission, said the “immensely welcome news is also a clear recognition of the importance of the film and high-end TV inward investment sector to the UK’s economy.”
