On March 4, No Time to Die—the fifth and final Bond film with Daniel Craig in the role of 007—saw its release date pushed from April to November. Two weeks later, theaters across the U.S. were closed. That’s how quickly the coronavirus pandemic wiped out moviegoing this year, halting productions and forcing studios executives to boot their potential blockbusters off long-held and carefully programmed release dates.
The broad upheaval has thrown the industry asunder, with studios trying new ways to connect with old consumers—including a collapse of the theatrical window. Netflix, meanwhile, has seen its subscriber numbers surge.
Still, despite the challenges and uncertainty about the future, theater owners are prepared to move forward with plans to bring people back to the multiplex as the economy begins to reopen during the pandemic. “We’re going to tell [consumers] everything we’re doing, and we’re going to explain to them the processes we’re going through to keep them healthy, but they’re not going to believe us,” John Fithian, president of the National Association of Theatre Owners, told Vanity Fair in May. “They’re going to believe it when that first wave of moviegoers gets to a cinema and sees the process, and sees the social distancing and the seating restrictions, and sees a great movie and comes out and tell their friends.”
Ahead, a full list of every major movie release affected by the coronavirus pandemic. This list will be updated as more movies are delayed.
