Rudy Giuliani Has Made It Out of the Tabloid Wilderness

You know who’s been missing from this whole thing? Back in the impeachment-shrouded era of Donald Trump’s presidency, his lawyer Rudy Giuliani was a primary accessory in the day-to-day reports of turmoil and rancor in the White House, even as Trump’s other lawyers tried to minimize his role. At the same time, Giuliani’s personal life remained trusty tabloid fodder, especially when it came to his divorce last year and the purported affair that reportedly caused it. Throughout it, he rarely seemed to mind.

But as the impeachment efforts fizzled and the coronavirus pandemic became the prevailing Trump story, Giuliani hasn’t been heard from too much. His removal from the public eye has been so pronounced that even Page Six, the tabloid that covered the divorce and affair in scrupulous detail, hasn’t run a Giuliani headline since February, back when he made a bizarre New York Fashion Week appearance. Not that he hasn’t been trying: He has a WABC radio show where he talks public health with about as much precision as you’d expect.

On Monday, Giuliani finally broke through again. Page Six reported on the amused reaction to his interview with Maria Ryan, the woman whom his ex-wife accused him of having an affair with while they were still married. As the tabloid points out, the pair didn’t mention any off-air relationship, but they did claim, echoing Trump among others, that the drug hydroxychloroquine is a good way to fight COVID-19.

“It’s pretty sad to see Rudy’s decline from ‘America’s mayor’ to hawking snake oil cures on a radio show that no one listens to,” said a source who Page Six identified only as a “D.C. insider.” “At this rate, he’s going to be touting drinking bleach as a coronavirus cure on late-night infomercials before too long.”
