Anne Hathaway steps up to the mic as the titular pop star in the upcoming film Mother Mary, the soundtrack for which will feature her singing songs co-written and co-produced by Charli xcx and Jack Antonoff. The first to emerge, “Burial,” can be sampled below.
Directed by David Lowery, Mother Mary also stars Michaela Coel, Hunter Schafer, Kaia Gerber and FKA twigs, the latter of whom contributed original music. The self-described “psychosexual pop opera” will be in theaters nationwide on April 24, with the soundtrack arriving a week earlier on A24 Music.
Per the synopsis, “long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance.”
Charli xcx has been highly visible across film in recent months, having recently penned the soundtrack for Margot Robbie-starring remake of Wuthering Heights and starred in her own mockumentary, The Moment.
As for Hathaway, she previously sung in the 2012 film adaptation of Les Miserables.
