Fans will have to wait a little while longer for the resolution for Shifting Gears season 2’s major cliffhanger. Marking Tim Allen’s comeback sitcom, the ABC project debuted to solid viewership despite being divisive critically. Now on its sophomore run, Shifting Gears‘ premise of former estranged father and daughter duo, Matt and Riley, coming together and rebuilding their relationship was more established, allowing the project to explore other aspects of its narrative.
Shifting Gears season 2 was an important part of the network’s 2025-2026 TV programming, especially since the project has consistently been growing its viewership share — a rarity for sophomore shows. This year, the comedy dove deep into Matt and Riley’s respective romances, which was at the center of Shifting Gears season 2, episode 13, “Surprise.” The outing ended with Matt going on a European trip with former flame, Eve, while Riley and Gabe’s romance took one step forward and maybe two steps back.
Shifting Gears Season 2 Has Officially Wrapped Its Run
Unfortunately, fans of Shifting Gears will have to wait for a while to see what comes next for both Matt and Riley. Although the majority of its scripted network TV peers are still in the middle of their cycles, the comedy has already wrapped its sophomore year. This was because ABC only ordered 13 episodes for Shifting Gears season 2. Admittedly, this is frustrating, but it is worth noting that the episode count already had an increase from 10 during its freshman year.
While ABC isn’t airing a new episode of Shifting Gears tonight, the network is still scheduled to broadcast episodes of the show by rerunning notable outings from the past year. For those who want to catch up on the show, four episodes of the series will air back to back, starting at 8 PM ET until 10 PM ET. Otherwise, all episodes of Shifting Gears are now available to stream on Disney+/Hulu.
Is Shifting Gears Returning For Season 3?
What makes the wait for new episodes of Shifting Gears worse is the fact that it’s uncertain when ABC will roll them out — or if they will even ever do so. Currently, there’s still no word yet on whether the Allen-led show will return during the 2026-2027 TV cycle. For what it’s worth, ABC has yet to make any kind of announcement about the future of its scripted slate, so not having any concrete future for Shifting Gears isn’t necessarily a bad indication of its future.
The good news is that Shifting Gears‘ strong showing in season 2 should be a factor into ABC’s decision. As both NBC and CBS, and even Fox strengthen their respective comedy programming, the Disney-owned network has a show that can already compete with other sitcoms on traditional broadcast. Unless they make a significant pivot in terms of programming, Shifting Gears has a good chance of coming back next cycle.
