Bob Weir is an American musician known for being the founding member of the famous rock band, the Grateful Dead. Weir, a California native, later performed with the Other Ones, also known as the Dead, with other founding members of the Grateful Dead.
Throughout his career, Weir also performed with and even formed other bands. These include Kingfish, the Bob Weir Band, Bobby and the Midnites, Scaring the Children, RatDog, and Furthur.
Recently, Weir’s team announced in a statement on his official Instagram account that he has passed away. He was 78 years old at the time of his death.
As the statement started out, “It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of Bobby Weir. He transitioned peacefully, surrounded by loved ones, after courageously beating cancer as only Bobby could. Unfortunately, he succumbed to underlying lung issues.” Included in the post was a photo credit to Chloe Weir.

As the post noted, Weir was diagnosed with cancer back in July 2025. He started treatment a few weeks before returning to his hometown for a celebration at Golden Gate Park.
During the statement, Weir’s team shared the hope that his music and dreams would continue to live on. As it shared, “And so we send him off the way he sent so many of us on our way: with a farewell that isn’t an ending, but a blessing. A reward for a life worth livin’.”
It was noted that Weir’s family has asked for privacy during this time. As noted by the statement, the musician is survived by his wife, Natascha, and their two daughters, Shala Monet and Chloe Kaelia.
The post concluded, “May we honor him not only in sorrow, but in how bravely we continue with open hearts, steady steps, and the music leading us home. Hang it up and see what tomorrow brings.”
