The Smile Scrap European Tour Due To Jonny Greenwood Hospitalization

The Smile have called off their European tour next month after guitarist Jonny Greenwood “became seriously ill from an infection that needed emergency hospital treatment, some of it in intensive care,” the Radiohead spinoff group said in a statement.

“Mercifully, he is now out of danger and will soon return home,” the note continues. “We have been instructed by the medical team in charge of Jonny’s care to cancel all engagements until he has had time to make a full recovery.”

The tour was scheduled to begin Aug. 13 in Latvia and conclude Aug. 28 in Valencia, Spain. Refunds will be available from the original ticket providers.

The Smile, which also features drummer Tom Skinner and Radiohead frontman Thom Yorke, would have been on the road promoting their second album, Wall of Eyes, which came out early this year. Sources tell SPIN the group is eyeing the release of another project before 2024 concludes.

As previously reported, this fall, Yorke “will be alone on stage trying a new kind of solo show thing, playing versions of songs from [his] recent and not-so-recent past” at 15 concerts in New Zealand, Australia, Singapore and Japan. Dates get underway Oct. 12 in Christchurch, New Zealand and wrap Nov. 26 in Kyoto, Japan.
