It’s hard to shake the off-brand James Gunn feeling that is probably inherent to this type of movie at this point, but Roth’s Borderlands does look quite fun. Gunn is a master of threading story and deep character work into all the action, and this will likely sink or swim based on how well it does the same. For now, it looks and feels like Borderlands. And that’s a good start.

The ensemble cast for the video game movie includes Jack Black as Claptrap, Florian Munteanu as Krieg, Ariana Greenblatt as Tiny Tina, Jamie Lee Curtis as Tannis, Cate Blanchett as Lilith, Kevin Hart as Roland, and Gina Gershon as Moxxi.

Edgar Ramirez, Janina GavankarCheyenne Jackson, Charles Babalola, Benjamin Byron Davis, Steven Boyer, Ryann Redmond, and Haley Bennett also star.

Here’s the official plot synopsis for Lionsgate’s Borderlands

“In the movie Lilith (Blanchett), an infamous outlaw with a mysterious past, reluctantly returns to her home planet of Pandora to find the missing daughter of the universe’s most powerful S.O.B., Atlas (Ramirez). Lilith forms an alliance with an unexpected team – Roland (Hart), a former elite mercenary, now desperate for redemption; Tiny Tina (Greenblatt), a feral pre-teen demolitionist; Krieg (Munteanu), Tina’s musclebound, rhetorically challenged protector; Tannis (Curtis), the scientist with a tenuous grip on sanity; and Claptrap (Black), a persistently wiseass robot. These unlikely heroes must battle alien monsters and dangerous bandits to find and protect the missing girl, who may hold the key to unimaginable power. The fate of the universe could be in their hands – but they’ll be fighting for something more: each other.”

Eli Roth and Joe Crombie wrote the screenplay.
