Serena Williams and Alexis Ohanian told their daughter, Alexis Olympia, that she was going to be a big sister the day of the Met Gala, when Williams revealed the news to the world as well. Alexis Olympia got a few hour head start, though. In a video that Williams shared on her YouTube channel, she gave a little direct-to-camera prelude, saying, “Olympia does not know right now that I am pregnant, but she did call me fat and then she got really like, stressed out. She was like, ‘Mommy, you’re fat.’ I tried not to take it personal ’cause I’m like, super into fitness, but I’m like, ‘Um, am I?’”
One of the top athletes in the entire world saying that she’s “like, really into fitness” is remarkable. It’s a remarkable thing to hear. The Serena Williams is really into fitness, just like you or I or that man on Hinge or that lady who is always at the gym is really into fitness. Remarkable!
Alexis Olympia takes the news very well. She says, “Are you kidding me?” before hugging her mother. “Oh, my God! I’m so excited!” she said, and then demonstrates that excitement by sprinting around the room. Later, Ohanian gives her one caveat, “But listen, you still gotta help us keep it a secret for one more day.”
The couple planned to tell the rest of the world that night at the Met Gala, and were ultimately successful, so we know that Alexis Olympia managed not to call Page Six.
While on the red carpet, Williams told the Vogue livestream, “There’s three of us here.”
The now-retired tennis star wore a black Gucci gown with white tulle to pay tribute to the Costume Institute’s theme for the night, Karl Lagerfeld. “Karl never disappointed with his designs, so we’re both just so happy to be here and get inside and not drink,” she told Vogue.
“I’ll be partaking,” Ohanian said.
In the behind-the-scenes getting-ready video, Williams added, “I am revealing to the world that I am pregnant. I’m expecting my second child, which is exciting,” she says. “This is a really important time where this is the look that I’m going to show my daughter or my son when they’re born one day.”
“They’ll look back and they’ll see, this is how mommy expressed herself and told everyone that she was pregnant with you,” she added. “And you want this moment to be totally iconic and totally fresh, but yet really special. I think it went well.”
