Neil Patrick Harris has apologised for serving up a “disturbing” meat platter made to look like the “corpse” of Amy Winehouse just months after the singer’s tragic death.

The graphic platter, which was described by a Twitter user as “one of the most disgusting and distasteful things I’ve seen”, dates back to a 2011 Halloween party. It resurfaced in a viral tweet mid-May, with many fans demanding an apology from the actor since.

The platter of food, which was made up to look like a dead body, included a card that read “the corpse of Amy Winehouse”.

Harris, who recently starred in It’s a Sin, issued an apology statement to Entertainment Weekly.

“A photo recently resurfaced from a Halloween-themed party my husband and I hosted 11 years ago,” he said..

“It was regrettable then, and it remains regrettable now. Amy Winehouse was a once-in-a-generation talent, and I’m sorry for any hurt this image caused.”

Winehouse, who was just 27 years old when she died of alcohol poisoning in July 2011, was widely thought of as a jazz and pop legend, enjoying massive success with her two albums Frank and Back to Black.

Despite Harris’ apology, many fans were so disturbed by the Halloween platter in Winehouse’s likeness that they said they would longer support his work.

One fan said on Twitter: “I can no longer enjoy A Series of Unfortunate Events, and any of his further projects, because I just found out Neil Patrick Harris commissioned a cake of Amy Winehouse‘s corpse for a Halloween party. Sub human behaviour.”

Another said: “Society is way overdue for a discussion about the way Amy Winehouse was treated in the early 2000s and 2010s by the misogynistic celebrity media machine and the people who were a captive audience to it.

“Neil Patrick Harris’ f**ded up corpse cake is just the tip of the iceberg.”
