Theron’s casting as Clea began to leak on the internet in the weeks leading up to Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The Oscar-winner is no stranger to franchises, having starred as the villain Cipher in the Fast and Furious franchise since 2017. She’s set to reprise her role as Cipher in the upcoming Fast X, which recently paused production after director Justin Lin unexpectedly dropped out a week into filming and was replaced by Louis Leterrier.
“Meet Clea,” Theron captioned the carousel of photos, which included a closeup shot of Theron rocking Clea’s dashing smokey magenta eyeshadow—a style that bears a striking similarity to the recent trend made famous by Julia Fox—as well as a shot of Clea and the Sorcerer Supreme himself, Benedict Cumberbatch. Given the fact that Clea only briefly popped up in Doctor Strange during a mid-credits cameo, the possibilities are endless regarding how she’ll be used in the MCU.
For those unafraid of spoilers and uninitiated in the MCU: in the Marvel comics, Clea is royalty in the Dark Dimension. She serves at the behest of Dormammu, the overlord of the Dark Dimension who faced off with Strange in the climax of 2016’s Doctor Strange. Eventually, Clea and Strange end up tying the knot—but Clea must commute between the Dark Dimension and Strange’s reality, which puts some tension on their relationship. Sigh; long distance can really be tough.
