Jojo Siwa has confirmed that, after a year of dating, she and girlfriend Kylie Prew are no longer together.

Siwa and Prew began dating in late 2020 while spending time on a cruise together, although they had been best friends prior to their relationship.

She previously revealed that they both asked each other to be their girlfriend, and Siwa had planned a “musical number” with choreography for the moment.

But in recent weeks rumours of a break-up began swirling following a series of cryptic Instagram posts from Siwa. This week, speaking on Paris Hilton’s podcast This is Paris, Siwa confirmed that this was the case.

She said: “I have yet to talk about this officially, publicly, but we broke up.

“But she is literally still my best friend. I talked to her yesterday. She just got a new puppy. She’s awesome. She’s having the time of her life; I’m having the time of my life.”

“I’m really lucky that I didn’t lose her completely because, you know, even though relationships end, friendships don’t have to end.

“I was very happy that it can be, because that’s all I wanted.”

JoJo Siwa explained that nothing “bad” had happened between them, but that the situation was the “definition” of “right person, wrong time”.

She added: “We’re both so young; she’s 17, I’m 18, and we are literally best friends. And I would take a bullet for her, and I know she would do the same for me. We just – literally, right person, wrong time.”

JoJo Siwa has become a queer icon for young fans since coming out

JoJo Siwa came out in January, after posting a photo of herself proudly wearing a shirt with the words “best gay cousin ever” scrawled across it.

Since then, she has become a queer icon and role model for her young fans, and is currently one half of the first same-sex dance partnership on Dancing with the Stars.

Earlier this year, speaking at the GLAAD Media Awards, she said: “I think it’s really cool now that kids all around the world who look up to me can now see that loving who you want to love is totally awesome.”

She continued: “If you want to fall in love with a girl, if you want to fall in love with a boy, if you want to fall with somebody who is a they/them or who is non-binary, that is incredible.

“Love is awesome. You can be in love with whoever you want to be in love with and it should be celebrated, and amazingly now, today in the world, it is.”
