Britney Spears is frustrated with “the news,” but loving avocado. On Monday, she posted a soothing video of sriracha-topped avocado toast, captioned, “In a system where I’ve felt completely hopeless for so long, at least I do have a platform to share !!!! As Selena Gomez says it best – The world can be a nasty place … I know it … you know it … kill them with kindness ☀️☀️☀️ !!! Unfortunately the news has been pretty nasty saying horrible and mean lies about me so I’m gonna post a little less from now on 🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️🤷🏼♀️ !!!! Pssss this was the coolest thing I’ve ever seen in my life and it’s inspired me to take on a new passion in the cooking field !!!! God bless you beautiful people … TA TA 👋🏼 !!!!”
The tone of Spears’s Instagram has taken a turn since she confirmed in court that she was indeed wanting to remove her father, Jamie Spears, from a more than 13-year conservatorship over the pop star and her assets. Her page includes frank comments about her situation, her family, and also a few topless videos posted with little commentary at all. The latter has led, naturally, to a lot of guesswork and commentary, with some observers fearing that the posts read as “erratic” and therefore will hurt her case as she petitions to be free from the bounds of her father’s conservatorship.
And that sort of concern-trolling was what she appeared to reference on a Monday Instagram, when she posted a fan video of a #FreeBritney flag. “Geez look at that flag !!!!” she wrote. “I was like ‘My flag up over the American Flag !?!?’ … Yes … I’m tooting my own horn 📯 .. is that bad ????? I know in my previous post I said you guys know my situation but LET ME CLARIFY … you only know half of it !!!! And for a lot of you who say I should be cautious with what I post … I mean if you REALLY THINK ABOUT IT … with what I’ve been through I believe I been WAAAY TOO CAUTIOUS !!!! One day I will live on the edge !!!!”
Monday’s Instagram, then, is perhaps a response to the response to those recent ’grams. It’s a good bit of messaging—you know, like a spoonful of sugar (avocados) helps the medicine (social media break) go down. But what is the “news” that is “saying horrible and mean lies” about her? It could be the report that a judge denied her and her new lawyer, Mathew Rosengart, an expedited hearing to remove Jamie Spears from her conservatorship. (It will take place September 29, as originally scheduled.) But that just seems like news. Maybe the “news” is just the net-negative of being the center of a conversation that isn’t sitting right with Spears.
Whatever it is, now Spears is taking a social media breather, or at least she’s cutting back on posting. In a way, this woman of extraordinary circumstance is just like us. She needs social media breaks. You simply have to shut down your Instagram, delete Twitter, ignore all “discover” pages, resist the urge to check your DMs, and take back your brain. You must!
And in another way, she is nothing like us. Because if she turns her posting energy into cooking energy right now, when she is finally free, she’ll get a cooking show on Netflix or YouTube, like Selena Gomez or Paris Hilton or (possibly in the future) Brooklyn Beckham. Maybe that is what she means by living “on the edge !!!!” Can’t wait to find out.
