Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor—the Pulitzer Prize–winning journalists who broke the story of Harvey Weinstein’s numerous sexual misconduct scandals and ushered in an industry-wide reckoning—are getting the big-screen treatment. Per Deadline, Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan have been cast to portray the reporters in the upcoming film She Said. The drama takes its title from the best-selling book Twohey and Kantor wrote about their rigorous journey to report the Weinstein story, which led to the power producer being ousted from Hollywood.
She Said is set to be helmed by Maria Schrader (Unorthodox), based on a script by Rebecca Lenkiewicz (Disobedience). Production will begin this summer on the film, which will be coproduced by Annapurna Pictures and Plan B Entertainment. The film will reportedly take the tenor of Oscar-winning journalism dramas like Spotlight and All the President’s Men, putting the focus on the reporters who brought this story to the public.
She Said is the most high-profile take on the Weinstein scandal thus far. Previously, the scandal inspired the critically acclaimed indie The Assistant, a disquieting 2019 film directed by Kitty Green that starred Julia Garner as an assistant for a fictional lewd Hollywood producer. The reckoning also inspired the 2019 Weinstein documentary Untouchable, which included interviews with some of his accusers.
As a result of The New York Times story, and a subsequent New Yorker story reported by Ronan Farrow, more than 80 women stepped forward to accuse Weinstein, an Oscar-winning producer and industry power player, of sexual misconduct. Weinstein has long denied all allegations of nonconsensual acts. In 2020, though, he was convicted of rape in a high-profile New York trial, and sentenced to 23 years in prison. He is currently serving out that sentence in upstate New York, and has appealed his conviction, while also facing down another high-profile suit in California.
This film will mark the third collaboration between Mulligan and Kazan, who previously starred alongside one another in the 2008 Broadway play The Seagull. Mulligan also starred in Wildlife, a quiet drama written by Kazan and directed by Paul Dano. The actor is joining She Said after a banner year in which she earned a best-actress Oscar nomination for her deft performance in Promising Young Woman, a searing rape revenge thriller.
