Video from Netflix Shows What Monsters from ‘The Ritual’ and ‘Army of the Dead’ Looked Like Without Visual Effects

Writer and director Scott Walker (pictured: The Frozen Ground) is set to get behind the camera for the creature feature The Tank, bringing on board five-time Academy Award winning special effects supervisor and WETA creative director Richard Taylor (Blade Runner 2049, King Kong, The Lord of the Rings Trilogy) and his team to create the creature effects, Bloody Disgusting learned.

The Tank is a story about a young family who inherits a remote and long-abandoned coastal property in Oregon and awakens beneath it a horde of ferocious and deadly creatures that feed on the living.

Oregon, 1978. Ben Adams and his wife Jules are in for a surprise when they inherit an abandoned coastal property that Ben’s recently deceased mother never told them about. Untouched for 40 years the house looms like an eerie relic over land which includes a stunning private cove and beach. The beauty and tranquility of the place leave the family with the nagging question: why was this property kept a secret for so long? While Jules rummages through the house looking for answers, Ben goes to repair the buried water tank, not knowing that in doing so he is unleashing a long-dormant creature, fiercely protective of its environment.

Taylor and the team at the world’s leading VFX studio WETA will create the creature designs and Taylor will work closely with Walker and a unique group of acrobat performers to create the creature movements. Casting is currently underway for the two lead roles.

The film is produced by Matthew Metcalfe (The Dead Lands, McLaren, 6 Days, Dean Spanley) together with Walker and executive produced by Peter Touche, Alison Thompson and Mark Gooder. Cornerstone Films is handling worldwide sales and distribution and will commence sales at the upcoming Cannes virtual market.

Shooting will take place in New Zealand later this summer 2021.
