It’s officially time for Lindsay Lohan to dust-off her “Jingle Bell Rock” ensemble from Mean Girls. Netflix announced on Monday that the actress will return to the screen after working on and off in low-budget indies for an upcoming untitled holiday movie. The romantic comedy stars Lohan as “a newly engaged and spoiled hotel heiress who finds herself in the care of a handsome, blue-collar lodge owner and his precocious daughter after getting total amnesia in a skiing accident.”
Those familiar with the rom-com genre may be getting a sense of déjà vu. The plot sounds very similar to the 1987 movie Overboard, starring Goldie Hawn as a wealthy woman who wades through sudden memory loss with the help of an everyman played by her real-life partner, Kurt Russell. Lohan herself is no stranger to a high concept premise: The 34-year-old got her start in Hollywood starring in remakes of The Parent Trap and Freaky Friday, which both involve highly unlikely switcheroos.
After a career working with directors including Robert Altman and Garry Marshall, Lohan has mostly retreated from mainstream Hollywood in recent years. She relocated to Dubai and Europe, making sporadic appearances as Elizabeth Taylor in Lifetime’s Liz and Dick and as a co-star in Paul Schrader’s The Canyons. Lohan has also dipped her toes into the world of reality TV as a judge on the Australian version of The Masked Singer and host of Lindsay Lohan’s Beach Club, which revolved around the launch of her own resort in the Greek island of Mykonos.
Lohan’s next acting project will be directed by Janeen Damian, writer of Hallmark’s A Royal Christmas and Christmas Waltz (both of which star Mean Girls alum Lacey Chabert). Variety reports that it’s written by Damian, Michael Damian, Jeff Bonnett, and Ron Oliver. Those in desperate need of Lohan’s festive new film will have to wait until Christmas 2022: according to the outlet, filming on her Netflix debut won’t begin until this November. That’s plenty of time to remaster Lohan’s infamous Mean Girls choreo.
