Glenn Close has little time for those who would suggest that getting nominated for eight Academy Awards makes her a “loser.”
“Who in that category is a loser?” she rhetorically asked an interviewer from The Associated Press. “You’re there, you’re five people honored for the work that you’ve done by your peers. What’s better than that?” she continued.
The question was prompted by the reaction to a recent article in the Los Angeles Times, which pointed out that with eight nominations and zero wins, she is now tied with the late Peter O’Toole for this unusual record.
The article prompted a stir, including an annoyed tweet from Sarah Paulson, wishing the conversation “would cease.”
Close, a winner of three Tonys, three Emmys, and three Golden Globes, by the way, is understandably frustrated by the “loser” narrative following Youn Yuh-jung‘s win for Minari in the Best Supporting Actress category over her role in Hillbilly Elegy.
“I honestly feel that the press likes to have winners and losers,” she said. “And then they say, ‘Who is the worst dressed?’ And, you know, ‘Who made the worst speech?’ Forget it. It’s not what it’s about.” She then added a suggestion with what to do with those who continue with this line of thinking.
The AP’s official social channels distributed an edited video clip, but thankfully Twitter user Best of Glenn Close is here to provide us with the full version.
While Glenn Close indeed may have gone home without an Oscar statuette at this year’s ceremony, most would agree that she won the entire night for her shout-outs to the great Washington, D.C. go-go band E.U., Sugar Bear, the Backyard Band, and “the whole DMV,” prior to a performance of “Da Butt” celebrated throughout the globe.
