We’re Predicting the 2022 Oscar Winners. What Could Go Wrong?

A year after their predictions for 2021 largely went up in smoke, the Little Gold Men team tries once again to predict the Oscar future.

Before listening to the latest episode of Little Gold Men podcast, in which Richard Lawson, Katey Rich, Joanna Robinson, and returning guest Joe Reid look ahead at the year’s likeliest awards contenders, you are welcome—if you dare—to go back to last year’s episode. Published March 5, 2020, it features that same group looking brightly ahead at the year’s biggest releases, including dueling musicals West Side Story and In the Heights, big-budget excitement like Dune and Eternals, and new work from major filmmakers like Wes Anderson

Well, you know what they say about the best-laid plans. There is reason to believe that 2021 will be a little more normal than 2020, and the moviegoing outlook is certainly promising—with Cannes back on the books, Marvel movies set for theatrical releases, and the Oscars, god willing, returning to their regular schedule. But it’s a reminder, if you needed one, to take our bold year-ahead Oscar predictions with a massive grain of salt. That’s the fun of it. Whether any of our predictions come true or not—the Ben Affleck comeback story, the In the Heights vs. West Side Story dance-off opening next year’s Oscars—the thrill is in looking at a fresh new slate of movies, and getting excited for a worthy return to moviegoing.
