Björk Cheers On Fellow Icelandic Celeb, the Fagradals Mountain Volcano

“We still got it!!!” the singer gushed.

Singer, actress, producer, and multi-media artist Björk hit Instagram this weekend in support of another newsmaker from her lightly populated Nordic island nation of Iceland. The Fagradals Mountain volcano, after a 6,000 year snooze, has erupted and spewed hot lava. It is the first volcanic activity in the Reykjanes Peninsula, where the long-dormant Fagradals is located, in 781 years. And Björk was all for it.

“YESSS !! , eruption !!” she rejoiced in an Instagram comment, using punctuation as peculiar as her musical output. “we in iceland are sooo excited !!! we still got it !!! sense of relief when nature expresses herself !!! enjoy , warmthness , björk,” she continued.

In addition to news footage of the bright orange ooze, the 15-time Grammy nominee, one-time Oscar nominee, Cannes Best Actress winner, and recipient of the Icelandic Order of the Falcon included an image from the video installation for Black Lake from her 2015 album Vulnicura. It was shot at the location now currently roiling with molten rock, and is, according to Björk, just 30 minutes from her home.

Black Lake was directed by Andrew Thomas Huang and was commissioned by the Museum of Modern Art as part of an immersive experience within a wider retrospective. A video of the two screens is on Björk’s official YouTube page, but this may be one where you kinda had to be there.

In 2010, the eruptions at the icecaps of Eyjafjallajökull in Iceland were so severe that it shut down most air travel between Europe and North America for six days, the widest disruption since World War II.

While the Fagradals eruption has led to some spectacular images, it is not considered a threat, despite its proximity to the capital, Reykjavik. “We ask people to keep away from the immediate area and stay safe,” Icelandic Prime Minister Katrín Jakobsdóttir tweeted out of precaution, and the government suggested keeping windows closed.
