Matthew McConaughey is Not Not Thinking About Running For Governor

Should Texans vote for Matthew McConaughey? It’d be a lot cooler if they did.

Matthew McConaughey appeared on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon wearing purple aviator shades and a smile, ready eager to represent his home state of Texas.

This Sunday he will host a relief benefit concert called We’re Texas held held on his own YouTube channel, the front page of which greets you with the phrase “all right, all right, all right.”

We’re Texas is raising funds for those effected by the recent winter storm Uri (the one that sent Ted Cruz to Cancún.) The line-up is a murderer’s row of Texas artists including Post Malone, Kelly Clarkson, Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, George Strait, Gary Clark Jr., Khalid, Don Henley, Kirk Franklin, Leon Bridges, Lukas Nelson, Lyle Lovett, Charlie Sexton, Clint Black, Los Lonely Boys, Parker McCollum, Randy Rogers, and, most importantly, Willie Nelson.

The actor, who only stopped boiling water in his home four days ago, noted that “we’re not divvying out luxuries, we’re divvying out necessities” He added that the people in need are “not looking for a handout, they are looking for a helpin’ hand.”

If this sounds a little like he’s leaning a bit into the noted Texan trait of hard work and rugged individualism, it may not be a coincidence. Jimmy Fallon took a moment during the interview to address rumors that McConaughey might consider a run for the governor’s seat.

“It’s come up a lot lately,” he said to the question. “It’s something I’m giving consideration. Absolutely. What an honorable thing to even be able to consider.”

With that, somewhat tongue-in-cheek (and maybe hinting at how he might handle a testy press conference) he closed it down with an “I’m no further than that right now, sir!”

While it is unknown what party ticket he would run on, in recent interviews, McConaughey has argued for being “aggressively centric.”
