John Mayer’s New TikTok Followers Only Want to Yell At Him About Taylor Swift

John Mayer tried to show his new TikTok followers that he isn’t above learning from his past mistakes, but it doesn’t seem to be going over too well with Gen Z.

The musician officially joined the social media platform on Monday, sharing his first three videos, which immediately got some pretty harsh feedback. In the first clip, Mayer films the center console of his car, saying “How do I flip the camera? How do I…can someone tell me how to flip the camera?” He ultimately figures it out on his own, saying, “I flipped it, hello,” before being cut off mid-sentence just as he begins to ask if he has to record all the way up to the maximum 15 seconds allowed. But while the singer clearly meant for it to be just a fun introductory TikTok, Taylor Swift fans on the platform were not playing around. The top comment on the clip is currently “you’re not safe here john,” followed closely by “taylor would know how to flip the camera.”

In response to all the negative feedback from the pop star’s fans on that post, Mayer followed up his initial TikTok with another video in which he nods, ruffles his hair, and repeatedly says “mhmm, yup, ya, I know” while staring into the camera. He wrote over the video, “POV: You’re berating me and I’m hearing you out.” This video, however, also did little to assuage the Swifities, prompting comments like “hello mr old man victim complex,” “POV: a man right before he gaslights you,” and “DON’T YOU THINK 19 IS TOO YOUNG,” in reference to the age Swift was when she began dating the then-32-year-old. The pop star and Mayer were rumored to have dated in 2009 and 2010, but have never confirmed the relationship. Fans, however, have long interpreted Swift’s song “Dear John” from her 2010 album Speak Now to be a scathing rebuke of the pair’s time together.

Before the day was through, Mayer tried one more time to make light of the TikTok trolling he was taking from Swift’s fans. He posted a third video of himself playing the piano in a dimly lit room while singing “That was a weird day, that, that was a real weird day / Oh-na-na that was a weird day, that, that was a real weird day.” He wrote over the clip, “Goodnight new friends!” adding in the caption, “more fun tomorrow.”
